Always remember in case of emergency dial 9-1-1. Be sure to tell the
dispatcher your name, the address or location that you are at, and a brief
description of what has happened.
The first step to fighting a fire is prevention. In order to prevent fires you
need to be prepared. An important item that every household should have
several of is a smoke detector. You should have a smoke detector in all
bedrooms in the house and also on a wall outside of the kitchen. Remember
to check smoke detectors monthly and change the batteries in your smoke
detectors at least twice a year.
Another item every house should have is a fire extinguisher. You should keep a
fire extinguisher near your kitchen in case of a grease fire. Be sure to check your
fire extinguisher yearly and make sure that it is charged.
Remember!! If you have a grease fire DO NOT put water on it. Putting water on a grease
fire will cause it to spread. To extinguish a grease fire you should either use a fire
extinguisher or if possible place the lid on the container to smother the fire.
Another key in preparing for a fire is to have a family
escape plan. You should plan a primary and secondary
escape route. Be sure to pick a safe meeting place in
the front yard so that you can be sure that all members
of the family made it out safely. Be sure that the family
practices the drill and that everyone knows what to do in
the event that you should have a fire at your house.
If you have to go through a room with smoke in it in order to exit the house be
sure to stay low to the floor and crawl. Staying low will make it easier to breathe
since the hot and hazardous gases in a fire rise. When having to open a door
always feel the door with the back of your hand for heat. If the door is hot you
should not open it and find another way out of the house.
If your clothes ever catch on fire remember these important steps:
STOP! DROP! ROLL!  You should stop where you are and not run
because running will make the fire worse. Drop down on the ground
and roll with your arms over your head and this will smother the fire.
